A.C. Newman – Prophets Lyrics 11 years ago
The song's meaning is definitely very hard to pin-point. I believe the meaning relates to the story of the artist's life.

/I was a silent partner, I found/
/Myself with the rabble who stood on the mound/
/Hipshot, thinking, but not out loud/
/There are too many prophets here/

The singer finds himself silent with a talkative person who is sharing their story. He's thinking, not saying, how there are too many prophets doing the same thing, keeping him silent. There were too many prophets.

/On the unlucky side of a stab in the dark/
/I took it in silence, I took it to heart/
/I carried it quietly over the wall/
/There were too many prophets there/
/I was behind it/

Reluctantly, the singer is hearing all of these story while he is the unfortunate one having to stay silent. He takes these into heart and into secrecy. Yet, everywhere he wants to take it, there are too many prophets.

/I was a silent partner for once/
/And I had been split into two sections/
/Here is my heart and here is my song/
/There are too many prophets here/
/I am divided/

His silence has left him divided. His thoughts go against each other as he tries to think straight, although fruitless. Although mind-boggled, here he his, pouring his heart and mind out into song.

/I was a silent partner, I know/
/The part of the forest where you shouldn't go/
/Now out of the woods and out in the day/
/I see there's too many prophets here/

The singer has gone through the world, experienced its challenges and now knows his way around. Now that he has experienced life, or has gone "out of the woods and out in the day,", he still cannot share his story.

I think the lesson of the song is to go through life making life memorable. We only have a finite number of years on this earth. Seize life, and make it a story worth telling. Be a Prophet.
