Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics 11 years ago

The Goddess of love Aine from Celtic/Irish pagan mythology (the poet being Irish) - where sacrifice where regular to satisfy the deities in return for fortune, wealth, rain, Love. Sacrifice of your dignity, the inner pain homosexuals go through in the face of wrong religious beliefs ("lies") is a sacrifice made for Love. As we know, pain is the path to the most intense feelings we experiment - what better song to explain it then this - from pain the best art is born.

forgot to write it but - the shrine of your lies - the idea that Churches often preach incorrect, outdated beliefs, therefore lies

"I cannot stand" - the song talk exactly about that, the lack of empathy, weather from religious people or not religious like you and I. And to be honest your comment couldn't come at a more appropriate place to illustrate exactly what the artist wanted to say. Love and understanding, not hate and dicrimination. And that why i rated up your comment.

Beautiful song, the music industry desperately needs song like this, songs that bring real issues to the table instead of just depicting fake exaggerated lifestyles.

Most comments here are pretty accurate, so ill just try to simplify the refrain, which in my opinion is about faith in Gods love.

Take me to church - said in a very confident voice, expresses the resolution of the poet not to be discouraged by popular religious beliefs that homosexuals should not be present there.

I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies - even though they say i shouldn't, and therefore treat me like a dog, i'll still be there worshiping you - shows humility in the face of God.

I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife - let me rephrase that: "I'll tell you all about me and my love, and if what they say is true, you can prepare the adequate punishment for me" - however ironic, shows a firm faith that God will be a wright judge, and that he is all about love and not hate.

Offer me that deathless death - give life to my spirit

Good God, let me give you my life - quite literally, take my life in your hands, i refuse to be judged by wrong interpretations of religious beliefs.

That's what i get from it, even though i am not a believer this song gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it.
And indeed, for you religious people out there: let love be your path to God, it will be a path we would all like to walk along with you.
