My favourite part about this song is the last line: i didn't know you when you were a kid but swimming with you, it sure feels like i did she talked about being frozen in ice earlier in the song. then at the end when she says this, she's saying the ice melted and they're swimming in the water. it's so sweet. |

This is one of my favourite songs off the new album. The melody is so infectious and the words are so sweet. I've only just recently discovered it's true meaning and it makes me love the song even more. "She's the kind of girl Who'll smash herself down In the night" I agree with Zenatyra about this line being about depression. I also feel like she says "in the night" because the nighttime is when people are sleeping, when no one's there to watch her in her depressed state. I don't think it literally means she'll only be depressed at night- I think it means she hides her hurt well. "She's the kind of girl Who'll fracture her mind, 'till it's light" Light-mindedness is a lack of seriousness, a state of ditziness, a light state. Fracture means to break something. I think this line must be a referring to how she uses substances like alcohol to feel better- it messes with her mind and makes her light-minded. "She'll break her own heart And you know That she'll break your heart too So darling, let go of her hand" I don't think that this girl will INTENTIONALLY break your heart, which is why it says she'll break her own heart. She'll break your heart by pushing you away and out of her life, but she doesn't mean to hurt you. This is where our next character is introduced- possibly a guy, or a girl, but for this I will call him a guy. "She's been skipping days Spilling her drinks in the sink" This brings back the "fracture her mind 'till it's light" line. She has been skipping days with substances. "And you know, she's never coming home Never coming home again" A home is a nice place to be. A home is a place where you can feel safe, sheltered, and comfortable. Although our protagonist may actually have a home, her mind isn't a good home. Rather than being safe and comfortable, she is the polar opposite. She's "never coming home" because there's no hope in her getting better. "But when she opens her eyes, Beyond the chipping paint, through the windowpane Lies her patron saint Broken and lame, and absolutely insane For learning that true love exists" The girl is unable to see, that, just outside waiting for her, is her patron saint. A patron saint is "the protecting or guiding saint of a person or place." The guy who was introduced earlier in the song is her patron saint, he's willing to get in her life and help her in her tough spots. She doesn't believe that it's possible that someone could love her- it seems absolutely insane. "So darling, let go of her hand Let go of her hand" I think this is like a warning the guy is getting, possibly from the girl herself. The woman is tricky, she's not worth the time. |
