| The Avett Brothers – Ill with Want Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| @[deekbooter:984] It's about their addiction to success/fame (just as much a drug to them). They recognize an insatiable thirst, but in their heart know that the fame is not what will be what fulfills it. @[Philsname32:985] nailed the scriptural reference up above, they know what what their purpose is and how misguided their focus is. This is about their continued internal conflict of seeking fame over love/fellowship/family. | |

I think @[preppyak:983] has the meaning pretty well laid out. However, I see a good portion of the lyrics being directed to his wife/family. Verse1: As pointed out already, focuses on the struggles of song writing. He is saying he knows his family needs him in the next room over but he's stuck with writer's block, likely from the depression of too much time staring in hotel bathroom mirrors trying to find "meaning" instead of being home. Verse2: Points out the shallow and callous nature of "friends" telling him how to deal with this music career. They think "the new stuff is fine, the old stuff is fine, just write something we think is fun. You're a rockstar living the good life, don't sweat it!" They don't understand how the attitudes and jokes about groupies & fame are so misguided. Verse3: Stardom, 10 years in the making, and he still just wants to leave this music persona behind, where it belongs, to come home to his wife & kids where he can be real. Continuing to be the rock persona would only result in people trying to tear him down, and he wants none of that anymore. Chorus: "You have no idea what this music life is *actually* like, your words are hollow" |
