The song could represent a personal/spiritual awakening paired with the fear that is experienced throughout that process. In a more literal sense, the song describes someone's own awakening occurring while looking at their reflection in the mirror; in a deeper sense, however, it illustrates the frightening journey of deep self-reflection followed by suppressed memories flooding into conscious view.
That's just one of many meanings I could ascribe to this song. One of the core reasons why I love Beach House so much - each and every one of their songs can have so many interpretations/meanings ascribed to them depending on the angle one views them from. |

Rather than dissecting each lyric word for word, I'm just going to share my thoughts regarding the main gist of the song:
Cultural and personal change. It hints at the current state of humanity, and the instinctual fear associated with great global shifts. On a more personal level, it insinuates one's inner fear of changing themselves when faced with the possibility of personal/spiritual growth. |
