I think that he's not talking about an ex girlfriend, but he's actual girlfriend. Like they're dating or hooking up and she falls in love, but he only want to have fun. "It sounds like settling down or giving up / But it don't sound much like you girl" It seems like he's talking about a girl who never falls in love, but has fallen this time; and as if Alex is the guy that always falls in love but now he didn't. And he's saying "Under a spell you're hypnotized / Darling how could you be so blind?" as she's "blind" to think that he could love her back. // Also, I don't think that anyone has ever seen those lyrics in this way but he could be referring to a fangirl, you can easily see the similarities in the video; a normal girl who sees a band guy in the TV and falls in love with him, and she starts to cry because she knows that he'll never be hers and at the same time she's happy for him because she loves him and he's living the dream. I don't know how I came to think in this way but it's obvious that after "Suck It & See" Arctic Monkeys started to have a new kind of public, the same public that likes One Direction and all these bands, that call themselves fanbases and have their favourite band member n stuff, and it seems like Alex doesn't like that new public, seems like he wants the old public back; like he wants the public that care about their music only, and not about how they look like and their personal lives. So he's saying "I wanna grab both your shoulders and shake baby, Snap out of it." Like he's asking the new fans to stop caring about shit and only enjoy the music. |
