This song speaks to me on a level that few songs manage to. To me this is all about the darkness that permeates our civilization today. Evil isn't very present today, but neither is good. That's what this song is trying to say. "Benightedness tipped the scales" translates to me as "Darkness and unenlightedness have changed our world for the worse". No-one is willing stand up for what they believe in because they are scared of the strength of the world rallied against them. Add to this that so many people nowadays are willing to close their eyes to the beauty of the world because society has provided them with such enticing alternatives. That's what "Incisive burns of the dark" means, it means society is quite literally cutting away at the beauty in this world. "A denied tomorrow calling on yesterday" In my mind refers to the future of so many bright souls crying out to a world stuck in the past to no avail, and because of this they are stuck in their "Self supported fear". Due to this, the "Lethean tears" (Which I believe comes from the Greek word "Lethe" meaning forgetfulness or Darkness) are the tears of countless souls slowly forgetting what it means to live in a world ruled by wonder and instead submitting to the "Sourceless call for silence" from a world that would have them stand in line and forget the "light" from whence they came. |
