To me, this sounds like a couple that's taking a break, separated, or recently broken up. There's history between these two, love, but something's changed. He's made mistakes, and I can clearly see that he wants her back, badly. He's self conscious, worried about finding the right words, afraid of completely losing her, "I am coming across so wrong, I don't sound so good tonight." He's filled with remorse and empathetic towards what he feels as if he's put her through, "it's not fair for me to act the way I've been," but missing and longing for her. He wants to know that she still cares, "are you worried about me?" When he repeats "too long" at the end, that pretty much symbolizes the entire song. Feist's "Now at Last" has a similar longing. |
