I had initially interpreted this song as being about death ("sailed into the fog," etc), but saw the band live last night in San Francisco. After playing this song, Jon mentioned having dated a girl he met in Seattle one Summer. She was an artist who lived in Tahoe. Her being an artist and he a musician, they decided to continue communication only through letters, not by phone or text. They both drove six hours and met at a halfway point, which happened to be a diner. He mentioned the name a couple times, but it escapes me. Perhaps someone else reading this remembers it better than I do. Their time together ended after just a couple months, and this song is about that. |
