I always thought it was "let them burn out" too. It does change the basic demeanor of the song, too. I absolutely love this song - when it comes up on my library, it always goes on repeat for a good while. Approaching it from the perspective of someone who has been called "empathically challenged," this one resonates heavily. It never really occurred to me that when she opened with the word, "Love," that she was speaking of the unknown object of her desires and affections - I always thought she was speaking of love itself. This changes the meaning of the song entirely, and colors the whole thing with a darker tint that I love. With this minor change, the speaker is declaring herself incapable of feeling love, perhaps remembering what it was once like, and wishing to recapture that feeling. At the end, when she sings, "There are too many stars reaching over the horizon. Let them burn out," it now takes on the feeling that too many people take this feeling and this intimacy for granted. These overzealous stars are using this mysterious thing lightly that she wishes she had. Let them burn out - it now comes from a place of envy or jealousy. She's no longer just looking for an object at which to direct this feeling, she's cold, and longing for the ability to feel it at all. If she can't have it, then let the ones who can burn out. It's beautiful, and it's a deeply honest sentiment that I have been trying to put to words for years now. |
