The thing is Rape Me doesn't have a single meaning. I'm not really a Nirvana fan, but it doesn't take a genius to see through this. While initially standing out as an anti-rape sentiment though sarcastic encouragement and everything, its chorus is clearly showing journalist language: "my favorite inside source". Therefore the further meaning is that of Cobain being harassed by the medias, whereas the paparazzi themselves become rapists whom the law is helpless against. Cobain could then only hope that they "rot and burn" in hell as a just reward.
I've read some of the other interpretations online, and many fans were stating that the song was written years prior to its release (someone even said that it was written before SLTS in 1987 or so... really?). But you have to keep in mind that the chorus might've been modified or added since, and by October 1992, when Nirvana first recorded it, the band was already famous. |

@[vincent505:500] I think you got it. Your interpretation is the best of all and also the closest to being correct. The fact that a fuse is "fireside" also illustrates how short this relationship has to last. If someone's not convinces, check out the lyrics in "Do I Wanna Know", where the relationship is described as perpetually going on and off, "crawling back to you", whereas here, it's completely different. Anyway, thanks for the analysis and yes, it isn't easy understanding AM's lyrics. |
