Showalter has admitted that this song is about Jason Molina ("JM"), i.e. Songs: Ohia / Magnolia Electric Company. The opening guitar riff makes this hugely apparent: just listen to anything off of Songs: Ohia's "The Lioness" and you'll hear the exact same chord progression. Molina's earlier music was filled with fire; his later with a more softened bleakness. Since his death in 2013 it's "hard to hear you sing."
