This song has a fairly straightforward meaning/message. Avril is saying that this girl had an opportunity but she went against her feelings because the people around her disapproved. In the end she ended up getting the short stick and finding herself living a mundane life that she isn't truly happy with. Listeners could get the meaning out of this song that they should go with their gut, ignore the people who are bringing them down and to take a risk every now and then. Or they could just enjoy it for the great tune it is! |

I really like this song - especially the lines "My friends and family They, don’t understand They fear they’d lose so much If you take my hand" It reminds me of some of the experiences LGBTQ+ people have when entering a relationship. I find if quite comforting to hear this, though. |
