I love this song and the lyrics have such an important meaning to me. It's about how people always assume they know the way you are and try to put you into categories e.g. "the quiet girl" " the geek" "the loud and obnoxious" etc, that will stick to you throughout your life. And these don't even have to be meant in a hurtful way, people that love and care for yu will do it just the same. But the lyrics tell you that nothing of that really matters, it's only you that defines yourself. And also nothing stays forever, if you want to change: it's fine, nobody is bound to the way they used to be when they were younger. This song really expresses a very special personal feeling of mine perfectly, and listening to it gives me strength. |

What? I never thought about this being about romance at all. To me this song has always been about a very personal, individual experience and being left on one's own devices. Like being in a new, challenging situation and don't know if you'll make it and how. At first there is still help ("der Wagen") but in the end you're on your own making new experiences and finding a way. Everything tells you to give up ("Gib dich geschlagen Und geh endlich in die Knie"), but you can't go back now and so you just keep going even though you don't know where it will take you. "Und keine Tausend Meter draußen vor dem Tor Erklang ein Brausen und es sang ein Männerchor" This is how the person finally arrives somewhere, it's a kind of triumph (the choir singing) but also the destination is still mysterious (because they're "draußen vor dem Tor") "Dann war Stille und dazwischen und davor Setzte die Pause neue Flausen in mein Ohr" The person instantly thinks of new adventures, showing how if you once took a risk, expanding your horizon, you will be willing to do it again and again. |
