Absolutely an abusive relationship narrative. What grips me is the fact that she can't get all the negative thoughts out of her head (serpents). It seems extremely debilitating. Her ex seems like a narcissist who constantly judges others but never himself. He also seems like a manipulator ("controlling minds") who has left his effect on the singer even after he is gone. |

It seems like she is speaking to a lover/friend who she is with who has changed along with her over time. She keeps saying they haven't met yet, because who they were before were just dreams of theirs. Staying in a relationship with anyone over time will produce some changes to those involved. I think she's saying that when they sleep, they are who they were once or who they think they want to be. But, when they're both awake, they return to the reality that they are both different now. They don't even know each other. But, at least they can still dream that they do. |

| Sharon Van Etten – Afraid Of Nothing Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I think this song is pretty straightforward. It seems that she is being strung along in a relationship with someone who is holding back. Her partner is either waiting to progress in their relationship or to amend something that has gone wrong. Sometimes people may deem it necessary to wait to do these things in their personal life because of life circumstances, but they fail to see the pain that they are causing the other person. When one partner tries to bury their problems or put off important decisions, they selfishly stunt the growth and satisfaction of the other partner. Sharon is sharing the thoughts of the other partner who is being forced to wait on someone who may or may not move forward or change. Frustration, melancholy, and defeat come across in such a beautifully understanding and slightly optimistic tone in this song. It's beautiful. | |
