The Marr/Morrissey meeting mythology has me interpreting many of their songs as a reference to Morrissey seeing Marr as his salvation. S P Morrissey, pathetic, punctured and alone in his desolate bedroom, failing to man up. Out of nowhere comes Marr, a charming man offering him a ride to manhood, even telling him that he's talented despite his own modest protestations that he has nothing special about himself. Marr even calls Morrissey's misgivings gruesome. Stephen! Grab this opportunity whilst the leather runs smooth! Don't dwell the complexities of why this is happening, carpe diem and enjoy the ride Marr's offering! Suddenly! Self doubt! There was I, happy to enjoy the ride unquestioningly but now I feel I'm nothing but a jumped up Pantry boy suffering from delusions of grandeur just like I'm prone to do! Typical me! But Marr said to return his call... and he seems so sure that we'll find success together... :) |
