I think Richard Butler is dissembling about the real meaning of the song. I think he wrote this about a transvestite who was either a prostitute or just someone who slept around. The reason her boyfriends treat her badly is because she's trans, not because she's loose. She turns herself 'round And she smiles and she says "This is it, that's the end of the joke" She was being taken from behind, turns over on the bed, smiles and says, basically, "You can go now." He's walking around in this Dress that she wore She is gone, but the Joke's the same She's the one who introduced this boyfriend of hers to being trans. The "joke" is the lifestyle. She waves She buttons your shirt The traffic is waiting outside She hands you his coat Yeah, I don't think it's "this" coat, but "his" coat. That's why I don't think Carolyn is a prostitute, because this is evidence of cheating. She hands him the wrong coat. |

I think this is a song about masturbation, sung to a potential lover. I think the reference to the hot bath is the "direct" reference, and when she talks about "to those nice nice nights", I think the operative word is "to", as in, she's remembering past boyfriends. Remembering past birthdays in which, metaphorically-speaking, they're in her "dark cupboard" with a "great big cake". I think the chorus is meant to say, "would you like me to think of you, too?" |
