I cannot believe these lyrics have not been transcribed. It is one of The Offspring's most overtly deep songs.
Everyone in their late teens to early twenties thinks that there is a big world out there and in order to define who they are to themselves they have to go and sample it. What Dex realises when he is out there is that the woman he left behind is all he needs to feel himself so makes it his only quest to get back to what he left behind, ie himself personified in her. |

I always imagine this being set in a bar somewhere in a down and out part of LA. The first line he says that he is looking out for love in the night so still. That word 'out' is critical to the message as he doesn't want love. He is basically saying that he has the world to give but doesn't want to because he is still hurt. The second verse is a message to the one who made him feel this way, the one he previously gave the world to. Later he has the realisation that falling for someone is inevitable even though he doesn't feel ready for it or feel that the emotional investment will pay off. |
