Per the lyrics on the official Coldplay website, it's "swirling."

Okay, open your mind wide for this one...

Could this song be from the viewpoint of an infant?

This about it... a baby would find all words to be nonsense... unsigned checks, if you will. It's not that the baby is being unkind in not replying... he/she just can't make sense of it all.

And their only reply? Do do do do, de da da da. Baby talk.

I know... it's a stretch. But it totally makes sense!

I've placed a bunch of replies to previous comments because the insistence that this is song is an absolute, undeniable reference to Jeebus is total hooey. C'mon... not EVERYTHING relates back to your crutch... er, religion.

How about this: The world can be dark, and storms of all types can rage about us all the time. And it's easier to find your way in the dark and back home when there a light to guide you. Fine... the "light" could be interpreted as God, or Jesus... but why - WHY - would that light ever shut off?

Perhaps the song is just a request to someone you love who loves you back. Leave a light on for me... i.e. let me know you've got my back.

Your last paragraph is spot-on... but the Christ stuff is an unnecessary reach. "...but bleed from thorns.." Seems like a reference to the rose - the symbol of love and beauty - not Christ.

Not just God, but GOD. Oh, brother.

Coldplay = Not a Christian Rock Band.

I have to be honest: Interpretations like this one make me sick. One line that could possibly be interpreted as religious in nature and suddenly Coldplay is a Christian Rock band.

I think it's great that the ethanhj has a whole ton of religion, but I really detest those who think their faith infiltrates every single corner, every nook and cranny of society. Not everything relates back to Christ, for Christ's sake.

Example: "..but bleed form thorns..." Well, that could as easily relate to the rose - the symbol of beauty and love - and how the thorns can make you bleed. Considering that Chris Martin was separating from his wife at the time this was written and recorded, I'd say that makes a lot more sense than the "apparent" meaning.

Good for you if you interpret the song in a religious manner... but there's nothing clear or direct in that observation.
