Nate Ruess – Nothing Without Love Lyrics 10 years ago
I think Nate is nothing without love. But in all seriousness, this is an absolutely spectacular song! It really hit home, showing that the most important things in life are the people that make it worth living. Truly beautiful. One of his best!

The Format – If Work Permits Lyrics 11 years ago
I agree with most of the other interpretations. I think it's about a failed relationship that Nate has come to terms with. In the first verse, it talks about the relationship. In the second verse, it talks about him regretting their departure. The whole 'sailer' analogy is genius. Sailors, being men, go looking for relationships, places to anchor. They think about why they are in the particular relationship and why they should continue. "I could make better use of my time on land", refers to Nate wishing he'd made better choices when he became romantically involved with people.
In the chorus, the song then goes back to Nate talking about how he's finally over this one girl that meant the world to him. "I'm writing my folks back home to tell them 'Hey I'm doing alright'.

The latter part of the song, (easily my favourite verses) is sung with sarcasm, where he talks about the telephone and so forth, I believe is about the girl coming up with reasons why she can't commit any longer, and Nate completely disregarding them, finding them untruthful.
And the final verse 'let her sink', is about him finally being over her and no longer feeling any emotional attachment.
