I believe Billy Joe and her daughter were lovers who got pregnant. They used a coat hanger or something to abort the baby, or found someone local who would abort it. They were on the bridge throwing the baby in to the water, probably wrapped in a blanket. Billy Joe couldn't forgive himself for what he had done and killed himself. The girl is having a hard time with it too, as well as dealing with Billy Joe killing himself, so that she can't eat. The mother's words in the song and the things she is talking about show that she is totally unaware of what went on between her daughter and Billy Joe. |

@[justsaying99:332] his is not about a gay killing boy himself. You should have read ALL of the lyrics. No man would tell a mother that "He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge
And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge". And if he did the mother wouldn't repeat to her son that someone saw a girl that looked a lot like him on the bridge. |

Dandy: A man unduly devoted to style, neatness and fashion in dress and appearance. He may have been that way when he was in a fraternity, I don't know. But I think it's referring to drugs. Maybe being the "dandy of drugs" would mean that, in the way a sharp dresser thinks his appearance will help him with the ladies, he uses the drugs to help him make time. |

I think I've got this song figured out after reading what bigdc67 said about the letters Gamma Chi resembling RX, as in pharmacy. He's a drug dealer. He's striking out with this nineteen year old [It's hard times befallen the Soul Survivors, She thinks I'm crazy I'm just growing old] and hoping that as she succumbs ["slides on down"] to the effects of the tequila and pot that she'll be open to him ["please take me along"]. He's urging the Tequila and pot to work their magic on her when he sings "Make tonight a wonderful thing". And the lines "nice, sure looks good, hm hm hmm, skate a little lower now" is him liking how wasted she's getting, and wanting her to get even more wasted. "Where the hell am I?" is too vague for me. I can only think of two things it could mean. It sounds like something someone would say when they wake up from a bender and literally don't know where they are, or something someone would say when they're not happy with where they are or how their life is going and want to be somewhere else. |
