this song is amazing. lyrically it lays out the most straightforward narrative of the entire (concept) album, and those giant choruses really help it fit as the centerpiece. jv is awesome. |

| Q And Not U – And the Washington Monument (Blinks) Goodnight Lyrics

personally, i think this song is about the band's disillusionment with established political parties. talking about the beltway spinning round, going down, and taking the monuments with it works as an indictment of national politics. "we'll sleep on ice when this bed is on fire/ we'll sleep all nice but instead of retire, we'll kick those lights out" seems like it's about privileged politicians living comfortably in seats of power as opposed to letting in others.
More importantly, though, this song is dancy as hell. |

| Cursive – The Martyr Lyrics

My favorite Cursive songs (lyrically speaking) are when Tim Kasher turns his sights on himself. In both this and in "Art Is Hard" (though both songs could also be interpreted as being about Conor Oberst, there doesn't appear to be any bad blood between the two) it's really impressive to hear a band led by a man who could otherwise be considered self-important or conceited taking some brutal shots at his own writing. He labels himself a martyr before and after devaluing the purpose of what he's martyring himself over. "Screaming your agonies, playing the saint" gives a good idea of the contempt he has for what he's doing. It's really impressive, especially considering that it does nothing to devalue the rest of the cd lyrically. |

"Oh, foolish worker bee - I'm your fucking queen."
Tim Kasher's characterization skills etc are amazing. What an amazing line. |

Look, don't get me wrong. I heart vagina. But this song is just really, really good. Honestly, I wish it weren't so difficult NOT to sing along. Funny thing, that one of the best songs on the cd has the most divisive lyrics. Just imagine a girl named Michael. Have you ever met a girl named Michael? No? Well, tell yourself she exists, and she is hell of beautiful. |

Man, of all things, this is the song that convinced me beyond all shadow of a doubt that MK Ultra rocked, hard. Listen to the subtleties in the bass and drum work. Lyrically speaking, I wish there were more here. It seems like such a cool narrative, but it could be much more if it were less about the speed lab and more about the romanticism of the whole thing. Actually, in reading that last verse again, I take it back. JV, I apologize. AWESOME. |

Travis's delivery in this song is awe-inspiring. He sings the whole thing like a disinterested cry for help. When he drags himself to the end of the line "nothing's wrong, I'm just fine/ I've realized I just don't like jokes" you know exactly how this character is feeling. The 5/4 time signature, ride-heavy drums, and perpetually coasting guitar and bass parts add so much to this song. Awesome. |

I love this song so. Nobody seems to enjoy it the same way. I appreciate it for being the most bizarre and twisted rap song I've ever heard. Also, the line "She simply wiggles her nose and disappears all my clothes". |

To me, this song really sounds like a declaration regarding those failed couples that try to start over again as friends with benefits. Stuff like "...and we're really not that lonesome" and "wipe the slate clean" all lends to that idea, but for me what really does it is the way he ends the second verse with "Sounds so good, I can barely bring myself to mention/it's just my sad, sad invention". It really seems like what he's saying is that once something's complicated, you can't make it simple again. Just my two cents. |

I agree, this song is amazing. Personally, I think that given JV's penchant for narrative, he means this song at face value: his wife is dead, he misses her. It does add a lot of strangeness to an already alienated song, but I enjoy it. This might be my favorite JV song, mostly because of the vocal harmonies. |

This song is wonderful. Of special note is the line "Well fast they come and fast they go/ and god I love that rock and roll" (are the lyrics above correct?) because it's a great barb towards how fast rock stars expire these days (through drug use or the nature of pop culture). |

well, i'm not sure.
but i think davey's talking from the position of someone who has a lot of regrets
somebody who's been hurt a lot before.
where he talks about breathing out loud and biting his lip, it sounds like he's trying to stay as quiet and safe as possible. runs long on a broken lung is just this declaration of how he can still live even though he's been hurt. or so i figure. |

this song is amazing. i used to not give it as much credit, seeing as it came towards the end of the cd and right before "pretty pathetic", but it really does produce such strong imagery. i think it's one of the best on the cd. |

does anybody know what this song is about? it seems the part with "i know they buried her body with others... know all your enemies" seems to be a reference to anne frank again. but then i'm not so sure how the rest of the song would work as a reference to that. it seems like the only pervasive theme through the verses is regret expressed to someone he loved, and a desire for forgiveness or a second chance. |

this song has a definite hymnal feel to it, and i'm not sure why - maybe his vocal melody line? anyway. not really sure what this song is about. i'd say the afterlife in general, and the bit at the beginning "you fly... into one that i love/ with all that was left within me/til we tore in two" sounds like he lost somebody very close to him, and that loss made him unable to love someone else in a similar way. just a thought |

i'm surprised nobody's commented on this song yet. it's immensely powerful, the way it just flies from "choking with her hands across her face" and glides sadly through the chorus afterwards. jeff mangum is brilliant |

but then there's the standard communist undertones. in the background of the chorus ("do i have to spell it out?") there's some distinctly swedish voices in the background spelling out O-R-G-A-N-I-Z-E. not that your comment about girls being awful isn't exceedingly correct. |
