Dead Can Dance – The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove Lyrics 11 years ago
I've been reading these meanings for years now and I'm finally compelled to tell you what it really means.

This is song from a married man who was having a swinger relationship, then unexpectedly fell in love.

"I thought that you knew it all
Well you've seen it ten times before.
I thought that you had it down
With both your feet on the ground.
I love slow ... slow but deep.
Feigned affections wash over me."

So he/they were just in it for the sex. It had happened many times. Just sex and fun. Hence the "feigned affection" no real love. He takes time to fall in love.

He does fall in love and they plan to leave their spouses for each other.

"Dream on my dear
And renounce temporal (time) obligations."

(From Death do us Part)

"Dream on my dear
It's a sleep from which you may not awaken."

Wake up this isn't happening. We can move on.

"You build me up then you knock me down.
You play the fool while I play the clown.
We keep time to the beat of an old slave drum.
You raise my hopes then you raise the odds
You tell me that I dream too much
Now I'm serving time in disillusionment"

She then keeps telling him. Soon, I'll leave my husband soon, I just need the right time to do it. It doesn't happen, but then she says "soon" again and again. Then he is confused, but hopeful, but so torn.

"I don't believe you anymore ... I don't believe you."

Again she keeps saying "soon" I will leave my husband. Yet he wants to wait. The love is deep now.

"I thought that I knew it all
I'd seen all the signs before.
I thought that you were the one
In darkness my heart was won."

He thought their love would win. She said she would leave her husband many times. In the darkness of love making he fell in love. It was just swinger sex, but unexpectedly he fell in love with her and loves deep now.

"You build me up then you knock me down.
You play the fool while I play the clown.
We keep time to the beat of an old slave drum.
You raise my hopes then you raise the odds
You tell me that I dream too much
Now I'm serving time in a domestic graveyard."

She keeps saying she will leave her husband for him. She keeps temping him with the love he wants, but yet she hints it will never work. He has since broken it the love off with his wife because he is certain this women is "the one" yet he lives the life of a tortured husband waiting for her to complete his life.

"I don't believe you anymore ... I don't believe you.

Never let it be said I was untrue
I never found a home inside of you.
Never let it be said I was untrue
I gave you all my time."

He finally realizes she is never going to be with him. She will never leave her husband. He has pulled the pin on his marriage, but he loved this women and did all he could to love her and gave his life for her. He did everything he could, but still can't get the love he wants.
