Dance Gavin Dance – Acceptance Speech Lyrics 11 years ago
I see the song as kind of a dark and disturbing story: you have a main character realizing how messed up his society is (verse 1: "twisted agenda, align my spine!", "the common ancestor, the pressure of industry"). he realizes how the system is shallow and able to manipulated (verse 2: "relationships are a tool..."), then eventually descends into insanity (verse 3 to the part with the crazed laughter?). it appears to end with suicide (last clean vocals: "I'm the one with my hands around the gun. I am not afraid. So what I'll die alone? all right.") I find those last lines particularly disturbing and heartbreaking, as they sound completely comfortable. "I am not afraid. so what? alright." so that's how I see it. a person in a corrupt society, going insane, and ending with suicide. so yeah. now I feel like I need a hug. from a puppy.

p.s. I'm not sure what to make of the rap, but I don't think it was intended to make any sense in the song anyway.

Being As An Ocean – The Sea Always Seems to Put Me at Ease Lyrics 11 years ago
knowing about Joel's faith it seems p clear that this is a song about a moment of feeling God's presence. it kinda talks a lot about how it's purifying, washing away doubt and mourning. it's a conversation between the speaker and God kind of (you can see by the use of the words "Father" and "my son"). in the repeated lines u can see that the whole song centers around the idea of being whole, clean, and free which is God's will for us. once you understand that the rest of the song kinda explains itself, so I guess i don't really need to go into detail. point is, this song is really beautiful. I love how Being As An Ocean makes music that's original and aggressive but has faith-centered lyrics.
