Interpol – Take You on a Cruise Lyrics 10 years ago
As for the overall theme of the song, I think it's a love song about a married woman, hence the hesitation/reluctancy & "scavenger between the sheets of union" line.
But I interpret the pitbull line oppositely from most people. Pitbulls get a bad rap; people are immediately intimidated by them because of the aggressive connotation people have associated them with. But with time, you'll find that plenty of pitbulls are sweet, harmless dogs. I think with that line he's saying in time, all your reservations about me will go away & you'll see me for who i am. especially since he says the pitbull line after he talks about being timeless and making money like Fred Astaire, both of those things being things that would make him out to be of a douchier stereotype.

"you're blowing by, but you're running" doesn't make sense. if anything, it'd be "you're blowing by AND you're running" but he clearly says "but." I really think it's "you burn bright, but you run out" then "I fell asleep in the alkaline". alkalinity is associated with neutralizing something and i think him staying neutral is a major theme in the chorus, not choosing a definitive side, hence "I'll never get anything right". Then again he does scream it pretty incomprehensibly so who knows, that's just what I've gathered from my thousands of listens. Either way this song is unreal
