You know, when I first heard this song, the image that appeared in my head when I heard the lyric "crawls like a worm from the bird" was always of a worm crawling out of a bird, rather than away from a bird. Sure, birds eat worms when they are alive, but once a bird dies and hits the ground it becomes worm food. It wasn't until I discussed this song with others that I realized everyone seems to think of the lyric, innately, as a worm running away from a bird. Reading the posts here that are relevant to attempting to derive the meaning of this song strengthens this supposition. I realize the authors of this song probably intended the "worm runs from bird" allegory. But think of it. All the interpretations I have read here about the song being about someone who is mentally ill in some way. Maybe at first this worm was running away from the bird. And that's what drove him to act. And now the bird is the worm food. "Terrified of what's inside, he crawls like a worm from a bird." Give the song a listen with this in mind. Gives a darker meaning to the song. Now it's not just about some worm getting bullied by a bunch of birds, but one where the worm finally succumbs to "what's inside" and turns the birds into his prey. |
