Breaking Benjamin – Here We Are Lyrics 11 years ago
From what I can tell, and from what others have said, this song does appear to be about a couple that is going through rough times in their relationship.

"Sing it for me
I can't erase the stupid things I say
You're better than me
I struggle just to find a better way"

This verse here can be read two ways: seriously and sarcastically. The first line implies that the singer (from the man's perspective, I would assume) is being told time and again by his partner that he says stupid things. The next line backs this up by him admitting that he says stupid things that he can't take back. The third line has him admitting his faults to her in an attempt to appease her. The fourth line has him claiming that he doesn't mean to say what he does, but he struggles with his nature and who he is, and things don't always turn out the way he would want. When this verse is read sarcastically, it sounds as though the singer is trying to egg her on further, to make the argument worse by sarcastically stating that everything she says is right and everything he says is wrong. Personally, I'd like to think it's a serious verse, based on how the rest of the song plays out.

"So here we are
Fighting and trying to hide the scars
I'll be home tonight, take a breath and softly say goodbye
The lonely road, one that I try to walk alone
I'll be home tonight take a breath and softly say goodbye"

In the chorus, the singer is talking about the fights between him and his partner, and how despite it all, he still wishes for them to be able to work it out somehow. The first two lines describe how they are both fighting and yet, at the same time, are trying to hide the effects that the constant conflict are having on them. The third and fifth lines seem to imply that he hasn't been at home for most nights, probably at family or friends to keep his distance, but that he will be returning home to try to work things out again. The second half of those lines, "take a breath and softly say goodbye," confuses me somewhat, but I think he means to say that, despite him trying to fix things between them, she should be prepared for the worst. The fourth line states that they are both feeling alone, despite being together, and that they are both "walking the lonely road," but the singer is saying that he should be walking it alone, so that she won't have to be lonely as well.

You wouldn't like me
Keep moving on until forever ends
Don't try to fight me
The beauty queen has lost her crown again

This verse seems to be where the arguments pick up between them, as the words seem to be spoken more with sarcasm and/or anger. The first two lines together describe how the singer is one that won't give up on something until the bitter end. He will never stop fighting her until she stops fighting him, which is what the third line is playing into. The fourth line is about how his partner, who is normally beautiful, a "beauty queen," has lost her crown and shown her uglier side once again as she tries to fight back. The word "again" is important, as it implies that this is not the first time she has fought, but it also means that she puts the crown back on, metaphorically, or rather, that they have moments where they aren't fighting, and she turns back into the beauty he once knew.

"So why are you so eager to betray
Pick the pieces up
Pick the pieces up

So why are you the one that walks away
Pick the pieces up
Pick the pieces up
Pick the pieces up"

These lines here are very important. Together, these two verses describe how the relationship finally came to an end. The first line of the first verse seem to imply that the singer's partner cheated on him. She stopped trying to make things work out, despite his efforts, and found someone else. The next two lines, I can only assume, are about how he's trying to pick up the pieces of his heart, or salvage the pieces of his relationship. I'm inclined to assume the former over the latter. The first line of the second verse shows that, even though the singer was considering to walk away from the relationship to hopefully have his partner find happiness elsewhere, she was the one that walked out first after cheating on him, which hurt him a lot more than if it were the other way around. In these verses, the singer's intentions to save face and help her find happiness were crushed, along with his heart, by her betrayal.

Note that these are just my opinion, and I would like feedback on what other's think of my interpretation.
