The song is about Jerry's mother, she died of cancer when he was 20 years old. Jerry Cantrell on the song : "Then there's "Sunshine" that's a really weird song, a really deep reaching song for me. My mom died of cancer about three years ago and I was really f*cked up one night and really depressed and full of self-pity about that situation and I just sat and wrote down all these different thoughts..."Then some dude came down to touch the mother...." I was in the hospital with my mom, she was dying, and my mom was not a real religious person. She went to church once in a while , but...There was a pastor at our church where my grandfather and grandmother got married , and she was pretty familiar with him. He was this really cool guy, and this other guy, this f*ckin big asshole took over the parish and he was like, 'out of my way, I will heal you, I will save your soul' That type of thing.He came in one night, brushed everybody aside, sat down beside her... like he was her f*ckin buddy. She's never met this asshole in her f*ckin life and she's looking at me the same way like , who is this asshole man, get him out of here. That's what that line is about." |
