Lucero – That Much Further West Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about hitting "rock-bottom," as a result of a failed relationship with "Katie". Going west is a metaphor for digging yourself deeper and deeper into a hole, which is something he's been doing for a long time - getting further and further "west" until he can't run any more.

Lots of people stuck in addiction convince themselves that things aren't so bad by comparing themselves to others who are worse off, and that final rock-bottom moment is different for every person. He "ain't that much worse than the rest" (of the people he's compared himself to), but he's "that much further west" indicating that, for him, it's time to STOP.

He knows, too, that it's going to take time before he's well again. And for that, I think, "west" starts to take on a double meaning; it's far from his old life, it's a place where only the skies are blue and he can focus just on himself for a while.
