the thing i can't sqaure up is the chorus. I agree with zubby that the song is about a shell of a man and the general narrative theme about an egomaniac celebrity millionaire who's regretting his choices in life after having partitioned his real self off. All of that is written in 3rd person. But the chorus is in first person. "..to murder MY love..." Costello didn't write the chorus to about the main character or suggest murdering love as a concept. Surely the main character has murdered his own real being - but the writer is not the main character. So why is it "my love" that's being murdered? |

| Wilco – One Sunday Morning (For Jane Smiley's Boyfriend) Lyrics

Interesting how this is so sad but still uplifting in that old gospel/bluesy kind of way. Is there something here about the trinity- father, son, ghost (maybe jane's boyfriend since he never actually makes an appearance?). Aren't there some ancient myths about slaying the father in order to realize the full potential of the son? "I wouldn't bother, he belongs to me now". The way the song fades, then rebirths into something slightly more lively, more soulful, more forward- looking. Love the piano over. |
