I just find this song so sad to listen to. Particularly with the 'ow ow ow' sections and 'ow-oo, ow-oo' it's almost like a child who has been hurt or a wolf howling in pain. That - to me - hints at such a painful loss, that feeling of something just being ripped away from you. Then there's the overall feeling of the song, musically. On the surface it's a lively, rebellious sound (in a teenage sense). Looking at it on a deeper level, however, it's a feeling of someone's anger and bitterness exploding outward. An image always comes to my mind of a woman lashing out in rage, laying into someone close by, most likely the person who has died, who is holding her and trying to console her as she is also crying uncontrollably. Almost as if he's saying "There, There, it'll be alright" but she is just sobbing, raging and pleading. |

Considering the rest of the album deals with death, loss, remembering and the grieving process, I think it's safe to say this song was inspired by the fact that she was thinking about a departed loved one so much in her daily life that she's dreaming about the person. Perhaps she missed the person so much, she desperately wanted to see them again, and this carries over into her dreams. It has nothing to do with sex or previous romantic relationships. The album was dedicated to their manager who died. He also happened to be the guy that got them into the business professionally. Also, Dolores' grandfather died around this time, whom I understand she was very close to. I know her voice is sexy but there is nothing sexual about this album. It's an intimate, personal album, but not like that. It's a brilliant album and yet it's so sad when you really listen to the lyrics, listen to it from start to finish and know a little of the history that surrounds it's making. |

Personally, I think this song is actually talking about global Communism/Socialism. In particular, the lines: "A ray of hope flickers in the sky A tiny star lights up way up high All across the land, dawns a brand new morn " The 'ray of hope' could be alluding the red flag of Communism/Socialism. The 'tiny star' could be an allusion to the then State Emblem of the Soviet Union. Then of course there is the 'dawn' of a 'brand new morn' The Hymn of the Soviet Union makes reference to 'the bright sun of freedom' "A rosy hue settles all around " - This line, in my opinion, is a definite allusion to global Communism/Socialism, more so with regards to the rest of the song dealing with themes of everyone being everyone's neighbor and living in peace with one another. "Hate to love, war to peace and everyone to everyone's neighbor And misery and suffering will be words to be forgotten, forever " - in particular, the phrase 'war to peace' is likely an allusion to the book 'War and Peace' written by the Russian writer. Tolstoy. And then of course there is the rest of the verse which talks about misery and suffering being forgotten. On the one hand because we are now living under one ideology and that ideology means that we live together in peace and harmony. The 'child' may in fact be Marx or Lenin. In another way, the song may actually have a more cynical streak running through it, in that the 'tiny star' and 'ray of hope' may actually be a single or multiple Nuclear Warheads being fired at the United States. |
