I feel like she is talking about someone that she loves (maybe a lover, but it could also be a parent or a friend), who only cares about her when they have the time and feel like they can be there for her when it's convenient instead of when it's important. In the second verse she says "And I wonder if you dream of me, when you're by the sea". She's wondering if she is anywhere in that person's thoughts even though obviously they don't make her a top priority. "And when you hold my hand, I don't feel anything." If she is talking about a parent, maybe she's trying to say that on special days like her graduation or wedding, when they showed up or gave her advice it didn't feel special or authentic because they haven't been with her through her rough times and she feels that they don't truly know her and it makes the moment that much less special. The same could go for a lover or friend. She feels like this person puts on a front and fools everyone else into thinking they have an intimate relationship with her when they really barely know eachother at all. "All she sees is gold", the only thing she shares with this person is false love and memories, nothing real. |
