Rise Against – Paper Wings Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song is about dealing with somebody close with depression. Paper is fragile so by saying "I've watched you fly on paper wings", i think it means the loved person has some sort of reliever if you will. Maybe drug addiction. It' a temporary fix and it leaves people fragile in the end. With depression, a lot of the time people will laugh in public or around friends, but deep down they really are depressed. "Between each smile there's a tear in your eye" can be referring to that. I think the writer insisted that the person needed help, and the train reference means "you need help now, and it won't wait for you. Soon it'll be too late". He's also saying that if the person didn't get help, he's leaving too, because he's tired of feeling upset that this person keeps hurting themselves and there's nothing to do about it. The bridge of the song is the person coming out of depression, and going back into it. "Is this the life that you lead? Or the life that's lead for you" says that the depression is controlling the person, "Will you take the road that's been laid out before you?" is saying that the person has been set up for a lot of help from a lot of people and the person won't take it. "Will we cross paths somewhere else tonight?" is another way of saying "See you on the other side old friend". The writer knows this person won't live much longer the way they are now and the writer is trying to making peace with the death of his friend.
