I agree that Isobel probably had an abortion. I imagine she did it alone, with no one around, maybe out of shame and out of the feeling no one would understand. I imagine she regrets that Isobel didn't dare call her, didn't trust that she'd love her and support her through this. She might herself disagree with the decision, she might have preferred to know what would have become of the child ("all the things he'd have done..."), but she'd have supported her friend for her not to be alone in this pain. I think part of the narrator's pain comes from thinking Isobel was alone through this. "I'm helping it pass by loving you more" seems like an attempt at being there for Isobel, even though she doesn't know where she is. I think there's also a strong fear of suicide, but I think it's uncertain, and the narrator doesn't know: "I hope you're safe tonight" lets me think she fears for her, but right now Isobel's only missing. "By the tree in Ennis where we used to hang around" There aren't so many songs talking about friendship - not the "besties forever having fun", but rather two women caring for each other, and though this song is a sad one, there's this love throughout that makes it beautiful in spite of the anxiety and sadness. |

I don't think it means something specific; the way I hear it, Bazan doesn't know either, it's a feeling you'd get when you looked at him. Ever met some people that had a way with life, seemed somehow to "get it", whatever "it" is? I could imagine it being that. |
