@[avesjohn:21948] The lyrics I agree are ominious... basically speaks of the human experience. There are always wars to be had and does it always original with our egos (what we want, or think we want) ? The melody I think is mundane.. it starts off with these two notes as if taking a step down, then back up to the step we just started off on... like left foot, right foot, then left foot again. And the drum beat in the background is like a pulse- sure and steady.. To me, its a perfect way of describing ordinary human existence, how we all fight and try and understand and think with what we've discovered, maybe we know a bit better than that other guy. (The fluttering guitar in the midst of that sounds like a conversation between two different sides, like a ping pong, being kicked back and forth) It happens on a daily schedule, its what makes up our lives, and while they're might not be actual bloody wars being fought, there is a war to survive in each and every one of us, and how much all of it is motivated by our seeking our pleasures/comfort. (And how what is someone else's pursuit of pleasure may interfere with ours causing our discomfort! ) Its a vise-versa thing, just like the two notes in the beginning. Which one is the right one? And how long is that going to go on? It has been going on since creation of man. Do we actually have hope? Do we actually ever possess the pleasures we fight so much for? Yet we can't just do nothing, yet all of what we decide we ultimately will be held responsible for. That's heavy. |

@[0au5t1n:21583] This is the best interpretation that you gave here, especially since Bowie's half brother Terry had just committed suicide about a year to six months prior to the release of this song. I'm not sure if Bowie actually wrote the song lyrics, but it may be that he had collaboration in the lyrics and might have been swayed by his recent grief. I certainly think so now knowing the facts. To me, this song stands alone from the movie, and its about suicide, purely about suicide- and fantasy and suicide go hand in hand similarly, because both are escapes from a world that is 'not always swell', but for others 'can be easy', which to watch others enjoy while you are already hurting and in need (and possibly ignored),makes it all the more excruciatingly mentally painful. They don't share, and its just how it works- "truth hurts". Stay and suffer? It hurts like hell. What other option is there but to try and go 'underground'? If hell is here, maybe that is the way out.... or so it seems to the sufferer. The phrase "no love injection" to me, also verifies this is more about the suicide of Bowie's half brother. (The song "Jump They Say" is said to have been written by Bowie about this event) . This world we live in somehow believes very stupidly that injecting a person with 'medication' will be a cure for what the mentally ill need (and have probably always needed which the absence of drove them into the condition they are in) - LOVE. They are always rejected, left alone, but what they really need is inclusion from others who are well, to battle their problems. They need support . Not pills. But even a love 'injection', is probably better than nothing. This is also why drug use is rampant... no love, so people reach for 'a fantasy injection'. Requiesce in pace |

@[skings:21581] Certainly, seduction is sweet like that- that's the worst kind- enmeshed in feelings of beauty.. Keeps the prey confused and subdued. Does Jareth actually love her? No. How did he fill up his goblin kingdom with so many goblins? A serial seducer becomes very efficient in reaching his goals when its practiced often. This film is so deep, I wonder if people even realize the psychological depth and meaning they infused into it. The Labyrinth of life and personal responsibility. Choosing what is right over what feels good (and what we think we want) and all the ways one can get trapped in between. |

@[LandClu:7264] , I think the part about not being a mountain is to say that he is easily moved by beauty or sexuality or whatever is so hot about this joy of his. In the Bible it speaks about having faith so much that you can move mountains- something considered immovable- how many mountains have you seen moved? They are always there. He's no mountain, and it just takes a little to get his ... er, ... get him 'moved'. *wink wink* He basically worships sex. I'd say sex with someone he finds highly attractive is his 'joy' in life, that which moves him and he's devoted himself to it because of the pleasure. |

| I don't think Martin Gore is a believer in Christianity if that is what you are trying to infer. . in fact, I think I read somewhere that he clearly stated that he is not. I do think he uses references to religion. I do know that he at one time was a part of maybe some sort of church youth group just before or as the band started. | |

This song has nothing to do with Christianity. I don't know of any *holy* song that makes fun of people with mental disorders, let alone vegetarians or other people. I'm somewhat shocked not to see at least one comment defending this point of view that lyrics like that should really truly never be associated with God. Some of God's saints were vegetarians. Some of God's saints had mental illnesses. This song just keeps perpetuating the myth that God's people are so 'blessed' with worldly gifts and 'perfect' not to mention 'well loved by the people'. Scripture and history of Christianity denotes otherwise. And the fact they make fun of people like this, when using God's name attributed to it is absolutely disgusting to me. I don't know what they are trying to get you to 'shine' but its not God's holy light of real and valuable love. Its more like a song about glorifying personal vanity. The Pharisees did such a thing. God called them out for it, and so I feel pressed to do the same as my savior, Jesus Christ. I'll give this song kudos for a poppy and catchy tune, but the lyrics are shallow and devoid of any true meaning. The following words are not: Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, Philippians 1:17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. Colossians 3:12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Galatians 5:26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. |
