Porcupine Tree – Lightbulb Sun Lyrics 4 years ago
Why would you want to make it about drugs or tragic illness? There's TONS of songs out there about major crisis and addiction. Far fewer simple "slice of life" songs. I think it's wonderful that Steven Wilson takes a simple event that we all shared growing up: being mildly sick and having/getting to stay home from school. I find that far more interesting than being just another one of the millions of songs about drug abuse or death.

I don't get it why so many people like to take refreshingly simple subjects and make them darker or more dramatic. I have a bandmate like that, and it gets old. Everything has to have a deeper darker meaning. I think some of the most interesting subjects are commonplace and subtle, just no one's bothered to examine them.

I wish there were more songs like this... I wish SW would write more songs like this! Much of his newer material *IS* big dark and melodramatic.

Devin Townsend – Earth Day Lyrics 11 years ago
So I bought the special edition of Teria when it first came out, which included a bonus disc with a few songs and a very somber interview (in which Devin did the day he had to put his old dog down). Anyway, he did explain bit about the songs. I can't be sure it was in that interview or another one. But basically this song is his conflict with responsibility. He's an adult, he knows he's supposed to be responsible: recycle (which is huge in Canada), eat healthy, etc. But he also wants to just fuck around and not worry about adult shit! His birthday (May 5) ISN'T exactly on Earth day (April 22), but it's two weeks later, so he's probably already feeling the pressures of being another year older when Earth Day rolls around.

I don't get the feeling he put a lot of emotional thought into this song. As with most Devin songs, he seems to wanting to do things that sound interesting more than have definitive meanings, which I've always liked. It's about the overall feel, less about the lines. Even though no one here nailed the exact meaning, it seems that we all get the general direction, which is what counts.

First of all, Devin is about having lots of fun!

Devin Townsend – Lady Helen Lyrics 11 years ago
Sorry to burst the emotion bubble for all of you here, but on the Ki "By a Thread" concert, Devin explains that his Grandpa made boats and named his personal boat "Lady Helen" after his wife, Devin's gramma. Helen only recently died, during the production of Ghost, so she would have been alive during Ki. However, it seems by Devin's explanation that he's specifically reminiscing about the boat, not his gramma.

I have no idea how this relates to the lyrics, as with many of Devin's songs, but I'll take his word for it. Interestingly, I too had a grandfather who had boats and the sailboat he had when I was growing up was also named after his wife, my grandmother. I remember long days sailing with my cousins and family in coastal Maine, so I can related to Devin's reminiscing.

This strikes me as a slightly Brain Eno-ish song, with lots of reminiscing about going out on the water, but without being as explicate as Eno usually is.

Unfortunately, I think many of Devin's songs are practically impossible to draw meaning from, I think he's much more concerned with how things sound than what they mean, sort of Yes without all the hippie-dippy transcendentalism. Yet some things are pretty clear.
