I think that this song is about the eldritchian nature of deities. Most fiction that features gods or goddesses shows them as benevolent, and always working to improve those who worship them. This song portrays the true nature of many gods. While some may be genuinely concerned with the self-actualization of their followers, many simply demand and demand. This song is about the art of finding spiritual fulfillment in their demmands, and not sinking under them. JustPlainNJ makes a good point in connecting the lyrics to Abraham sacrificing Isaac. I think that part of the song shows the connection between the God of the Old Testament and the gods described in this song. Both were powerful beyond comprehension, but also cruel and wanting. |
