I'm gonna go against the prevailing interpretation. The girl's just approaching adulthood, and she's very well aware of how appealing she is to men--particularly older men, to whom she's a forbidden fruit. So she seduces one ("Now you gotta kiss me") and tells him that he'll have to keep meeting her needs if he doesn't want her spilling the beans ("So I wouldn't miss me if you get me, mister, see?"). Why, yes, this is very twisted behavior--implying some sort of emotional disturbance. Thinking "If you kiss me, mister, you must think I'm pretty" isn't an unreasonable conclusion--but when it leads into "If you think so, mister, you must want to fuck me", that's a hell of a leap. Combine that with the next two lines of that verse, and it starts to seem like our narrator has abandonment issues and has possibly been molested. It's possible it was her father or another older man; that would explain why she's flirting with older men--trying to repeat the pattern--but just having been molested would explain why she has such a simplistic yet distorted "understanding" of lust and love. All forms of child abuse--sexual or otherwise--can really fuck up the way victims process things, even when they're grown adults. Mister is starting to get tired of their agreement, though, and perhaps even scared of or bored with Girl. Maybe he's looking for somewhere else to sow his wild oats, or maybe he's just trying to get away from her. Either way, he "keeps leaving" and she's afraid he'll abandon her just like the last man who (as far as she understood) "loved" her--so she threatens to "make [him] suffer" one last time, asserts that he'll miss her in jail, and mixes in a dose of the old waterworks ("I'm fragile, mister...") but he finally puts his foot down and says it's over, so she makes good on her threat, thinking about how much he deserves it. With that done, though, she ends up regretting it, and starts trying to visit him in jail--but he doesn't even want to see her. In the end, she misses him, but he doesn't miss her. |
