Lana Del Rey – Video Games Lyrics 9 years ago
To me, the foundation for this song is pretty obvious given Lana's predilection for traditional gender & relationship roles, as well as 1950s & 1960s Americana. She even styled herself a new-age Nancy Sinatra, and doesn't accept feminism. In short, she's old-fashioned, supportive, and generally a more submissive female when it comes to her interactions with men she respects.

So, in a nutshell...She's in love, everything she does is for him, she styles her clothing to his liking, and is waiting patiently for him to return that attention...she longs for it. She'd be content just sitting in the same room with him, focused on his needs while he has his attention on other things. She's smitten.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 9 years ago
Biblical, mythical, intimate, romantic, and cryptic. The soul of Jeff Buckley lives on in this version, and I don't see how it'll ever be eclipsed. In the end, however, it's about all forms of love--the love you have for your friends, your family, your soul mate, and the love others (spiritual and mortal) have for you whether you realize it/care or not.

Hallelujah can mean "praise the Lord" in a religious sense. However, you can thoroughly enjoy this as a non-believer, as Hallelujah is universal--a word appropriate for expressing awe, thanks, and appreciation.

Anna Nalick – Catalyst Lyrics 9 years ago
The world sucks, and so do the people in it. Not even strong pharmaceuticals can dim the pain. So, in the end, you have to pull yourself out of it or succumb.

Annie – Anthonio Lyrics 9 years ago
Every man's nightmare. Some girl has your baby, keeps it from you, then comes calling for cash later. I do love this song, though.

Metric – Combat Baby Lyrics 9 years ago
Simple. This girl wants a man who will stand up, be strong, and not be a modern-day pushover. She's longing for someone who won't just give up and move on, but assert himself and show he's worth it more than the rest.

Metric – The Police and the Private Lyrics 9 years ago
Been a Metric fan for years, and I've always thought this song was referring to two separate illegal career moves. In my opinion, the first half talks about being a drug-dealer, hence the reference to the bag. The 2nd half roughly refers to prostitution, hence keeping one eye on the bed. Some people find themselves in desperate situations and will do whatever it takes to provide for those they love.

George Michael – One More Try Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't know if George Michael has ever said this, but I truly believe this to be autobiographical. The song was released on the album 'Faith' in 1987 and again as a single in 1988. This song is regarding a romantic homosexual relationship between a young George Michael and an older man.

Wham! was a pop group. George struggled with his fame and sexuality during the Wham period, never quite feeling right or honest. Women were coming onto him, and he admits to having sex with them and feeling horrible about it. When he went solo, I think he already had a lot of ideas for songs that would apply to him and the adult contemporary audience.

The late 80s were a hotbed for gay discussions as well as the prevalence of AIDS at the time. George was clearly straddling the fence at this point due to the gay stigma. He needed his crossover to be successful, but couldn't be out about it. However, this song is absolutely, positively, without a doubt about a relationship with another man.

When you consider the appeal of anonymous sex (for which he was arrested in the early 90s) the lyrics "when you were just a stranger, and i was at your feet. I didn't feel the danger. Now I feel the heat." ring as true as the bell ringing the hour above Notre Dame.

George had a relationship with an older man in his early 20s. This man taught him a lot, but that led George into feelings for this man, who ultimately didn't reciprocate them but enjoyed George sexually. George had feelings for this older mentor, this teacher, felt comfortable with him and wanted more...but at the same time felt confused and put off. In the end, we know that George didn't maintain a relationship with this man and was probably used. The fact he wrote a lovely song about it, however, shows the impact this anonymous man left.
