David Byrne – Something Ain't Right Lyrics 11 years ago
Looks like DB isn't a big fan of religion. Seems like a song ranting about God, and that something is not right with the whole situation and religion's effect on modern society.

David Byrne – Now I'm Your Mom Lyrics 11 years ago
Seems to be basically about a sex change and a commentary on the whole identification of men and women, but it seems to be a pretty negative one at that. It says, boys are boys and girls are girls, but some people want to change that. He then goes on to say how the idea is ridiculous and against nature. But then I think it might take a more positive turn at the end, maybe saying how these people are pioneers that are embracing their true nature. And that is an advancement in society that these people have this option and that they can be "suddenly free."

David Byrne – Girls On My Mind Lyrics 11 years ago
A kind of silly, fun song on the record. It is about a guy who just can't stop thinking about girls. There might be a deeper meaning, since it is a Byrne song, but I can't really find it. Maybe it is a commentary on how men let their hormones and urges completely take over their decisions, actions, and thoughts.

David Byrne – Everyone's In Love With You Lyrics 11 years ago
It's about him going to a party or social event with a date, but everyone there is interested about the date and they ignore him. It's like being in a conversation when everyone pays attention to the person you're with and you are just standing there being ignored. It's pretty self-explanatory in the lyrics. He is proud that everyone is in love with this person, but he is also pretty annoyed by it too. None of the attention is on him.

David Byrne – Empire Lyrics 11 years ago
In a live performance of this song, David said he wrote this song as a sort of capitalist national anthem, but that he didn't really believe in it. There is definitely a lot of irony in this one.

David Byrne – Big Blue Plymouth (Eyes Wide Open) Lyrics 11 years ago
Ecstasy, the feeling. Whether it is sexual, religious, or what have you. He is trying to explore the idea of being ecstatic, and figure out what it is. There is a video of Talking Heads playing this song with different videos of people in ecstasy over it. David said that he was really interested in the topic, talking about how people look so ridiculous when they are in ecstasy, but that no one really cares.

David Byrne – Back In The Box Lyrics 11 years ago
I think "going back in the box" is a way of saying that he wants to be alone and isolate himself. He can't make any mistakes, problems, or anything if he just sits alone in his box, away from everyone and anything. It pretty nicely sums up the feelings of the album and of David's emotional state at the time.

David Byrne – Astronaut Lyrics 11 years ago
This song revolves all around the idea of alienation. He is watching the world change in front of him as if he is alone watching it through a TV, or is an astronaut in space watching the earth. David himself said that the line "Feel like I'm an astronaut" was probably the cheesiest metaphor for alienation.

David Byrne – Angels Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it is the opposite of trying to become more religious. Or maybe it is a conflict, as he has said before that he didn't believe in a god. Since this album was inspired by a death in his family, I think David is simultaneously angry with life and confused by it. I can't really find the exact meaning, but I don't think many of his songs have a very direct meaning. To me the most emotional part of the song is the end when he repeats "I'm ready now" until finally ending with "But where are you." So he keeps saying he is ready for something, but what? And now that he has decided he is ready, he realizes that this person is missing and that he is alone. It's a tough song to grasp, but it is clearly emotional.

David Byrne – Buck Naked Lyrics 11 years ago
A pretty deep and emotional song. David said he wrote this song for his niece, when her aunt (David's sister-in-law) died. I think it deals heavily with humility, especially "We're buck naked now, in the eyes of the lord," and "We're all naked if you turn us inside out." I think it is David trying to explain death in another light, while trying to understand it himself. Very deep.

Peter Gabriel – The Barry Williams Show Lyrics 11 years ago
It seems to be a commentary on exploiting people's troubles and conflicts on popular shows like Jerry Springer. In the end, which can be confirmed by the video, Barry has an obsessed fan who plots to murder him where it talks about the girl with no scruples who conceived this unbelievable plot. It then goes on to say "no man is an island" is a quote from MEDITATION XVII by John Donne, which is about how when a man dies, everyone is affected by it. So it seems the fan succeeded with her plot and murdered Barry, and now everyone is affected by the loss. If he was actually killed, or if his spot was just taken - who knows.

Peter Gabriel – Me And My Teddy Bear Lyrics 11 years ago
Gabriel said he wrote this song when he shaved his head, and his hair grew back all short and fuzzy. He called it his teddy bear hairstyle.
