| Keane – The Frog Prince Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| At one point the band stated this song was directed at Johnny Borrell from the band Razorlight because of how arrogant he had become. Could have been a joke, but I wouldn't be surprised if maybe Tom or Tim had been close to Johnny before they made it big. They are from the same area, formed around the same time and have similar styles. | |

To me it seems that the song starts out pretty nostalgic, with him remembering another time before responsibility, when you would "sing about a golden age." I think the most important part of this song is certainly this stanza: And I don't miss my little golden age Cause the body takes the heart, takes the heart from place to place But this place still stands, this place remains unchanged And you can't go back but who would want to anyway He doesn't miss it, because he realizes that every part of life is simply another phase, and if he wants to return to one phase, he'll find himself missing out on all the other phases of life. He also makes the statement that his little golden age will always be the same. It will always be perfect, and I think he doesn't want to return to that time because the nostalgia will be gone and it will no longer be perfect. Perfect song for the everyman. |

I think to fully understand this song it's easiest to watch the music video. A short summary of the video follows: It shows a woman in paradise, she is sitting by a pool and a man is handing her a sophisticated looking beverage. I believe it is simply a daydream of the protagonist, seeing as it shows the same woman preparing to take off in a space ship. She places a retro newspaper clipping in front of her that says "Come be a star!" and has a picture of some far off planet. As the woman travels through space she comes to multiple places where she has to pay for something (tollway, fuel, repairs), but she has insufficient credit to pay. She ends up trading body parts which she unscrews from her body (hand, foot, leg, etc.). As she is traveling through an asteroid field it flashes back to her in paradise where she drops the beverage handed to her by the attractive man because she has but a stub of a hand. Her spaceship is damaged to the point of being inoperable, and so she simply lays back with a tear in her eye. Flash forward to James Mercer and Danger Mouse boarding the spaceship. They find her, and replace all her body parts. She is then placed in an escape pod and dropped on the planet she had her heart set on, but alas instead of an attractive man to serve her and a temperate pool to tan by she finds only waste and a ruin here and there. As she looks into the sky, she see only her spaceship flying away, leaving her alone on this desolate paradise at the edge of the world. I think it is a clear reference to anyone in this world who sells themselves (in a non-literal sense of course) to achieve something which usually turns out to be an empty achievement. Also these lyrics are probably the worst I've seen on this site yet 0.o |

| Keane – Nothing In My Way Lyrics | 11 years ago |

I think this is about a person who is dating someone who is very closed up, but has some very serious issues. "Why'd you laugh/When I know that you hurt inside?" This phrase is a reference to when he asked her what was wrong, because it is obvious she isn't feeling well, but she simply laughed it off as nothing. "And why'd you say/It's just another day/Nothing in my way/I don't wanna go, I don't wanna stay/So there's nothing left to say" She's abruptly ending the conversation, making it clear she doesn't want to talk to him about it "And why'd you lie/When you wanna die, when you hurt inside/Don't know what you lie for anyway/Now there's nothing left to say" Saying she wants to die shows there are some serious issues, you know more than your typical down-day. I think these lines also do best to show his frustration with her for not talking, saying "Now there's nothing left to say" shows he's just as finished having this conversation as she is. "Don't know what you lie for anyway" he is trying to show her there is no reason to lie, he knows something is wrong, but he can't help unless she opens up to him. "For a lonely soul you're having such a nice time" He's saying she doesn't let anyone in, making her a lonely soul, yet she trying to masquerade around as if everything is fine. You also have to listen to the tone of the song. The score is very different from Keane's other work in the sense that it sounds very dark and angry, generally their music sounds upbeat and happy despite what the lyrics say. I think that they did this on purpose because he is obviously upset with how she is treating this relationship by not letting him in. This reminds me of a comical post I saw about what women would be like in space: "Houston we have a problem" "What's wrong" "Nothing" "But you said-" "Nothing is going on" "Please tell us" "I'm fine." |
