This song seems to be about a person who you have had memories with, that leads you to believe there is something deep in the relationship, but then backs out and escapes, thus the title "The Escape Artist". "Run, run like you've already done You've gotta move to meet demand You're far flung when the music's done You better find a place to land" Pretty straightforward, the writer sarcastically tells the person to do what she must, which seems to be work [move to meet demand]. But he realizes that the person is "far flung" from the relationship, when "the music's done", which is in reference to the writer's job of writing music. "It's all true when I lit that fuse I never meant to be your friend I kicked the tire but it caught on fire I'm gonna try to make amends" I think the fuse litting is symbolic of opening up to that person and not wanting to be just friends. Then the other lines sound like the writer talked about the distance "I kicked the tire", but it apparently lead to an argument "but it caught on fire". "Part two, now you're back in the news You're gonna spread the word around I'm all done because the song is sung I'm gonna black my windows out" Seems the person is spreading lies which the writer can clearly see, thus ignores and will "black his windows out". "You act mysterious but you speak in gibberish You can take your memory I'm off, I'd better be alone Alone" Seems the person acts like there's something to hide and makes up excuses. Writer then proclaims he's better off alone and ends the relationship. |
