Florence + the Machine – Shake It Out Lyrics 11 years ago
Most of her songs are about being the other woman (mistress). She was looking for heaven or love in a guy but all it caused was for her to live in sin. Now she's got a guilty conscience and a devil on her back, she's trying to shake it off and start over fresh.

Florence + the Machine – No Light, No Light Lyrics 11 years ago
This song as well so many others is about being the other woman (mistress). There is no light because the relationship is always hidden. That's why she prefers darkness in all of her songs, that's the only place where she can be with him

Just like "cosmic love" and "never let me go" and "no light" this song is about being the other woman (mistress), but in this song she is ultimately telling him to do the right thing, and fulfill his destiny with his wife. But she will always love him, she will always be able to find him by following those heart lines on his hand. It was all just a fantasy that they would ever be together in the end... but things got rocky and now it's time to let go. She tells him to think about Wednesday's up against the wall. Wednesday's were probably the days they met to have sex and be together. So always parallels water and the ocean to being is his arms (arms of the ocean) so the river she talks about in the beginning of the song is the only place she feels free

This song is about being the other woman. There is a theme in her writing. Look at the lyrics to "never let me go"

I reckon that the "the ocean is a person" somebody that envelopes her completely that she loses herself and gets overwhelmed too much but it's more on the fact that she is a mistress, the other woman..hence "the sinner like me", "pressure is hard to take" "seems like a heavy choice to make"..she fell for her lover, realizing it at the end and asking him to never let her go accepting it and not gonna ask for anything in return. She is under his spell "but I'm not giving up, I'm just giving in." just an observation.

If you look at the lyrics to cosmic love she is also talking about being the other woman, being caught under his spell and blinded, not able to leave him, always in the shadow of his heart (playing second fiddle), no dawn and no day, meaning always has to hide it, not let it be known, but that's where she'd rather be.

I think the song is about being seduced by a married man. She then becomes captivated by him and under his spell. She realizes he does not love her and is just using her for sex. She tries to leave but feels alone and lost without him. She decides to keep seeing him which is morally wrong but it's because she realizes she is nothing without him. Both of them continue to see eachother and live in darkness (ie doing what is wrong) She lives in the shadow of his heart because she is the "other woman", she will always be second to his wife and she is not allowed to openly acknowledge their relationship, always hiding it and being in the shadows.

Breakdown:
I think the song is about being seduced by a married man. She then becomes captivated by him and under his spell.

"A falling star fell from your heart and landed in my eyes
I screamed aloud, as it tore through them, and now it's left me blind"

She realizes he is just using her for sex and does not truly love her, but it's too late, because she's fallen in love with a married man and entered the dark side. There will never be and light. The relationship will always have to be hidden. She will never have all of his heart as she will always come second.

"The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart"

When she's with him in her moral darkness (the affair) she feels alive, but he stops seeing her and she realizes that she's become a bad person. She tries to leave to find requited love with another man but it just leaves her empty without him.

"And in the dark, I can hear your heartbeat
I tried to find the sound
But then it stopped, and I was in the darkness,
So darkness I became"

She finds her way back to him and decides she will always be the other woman.

"I took the stars from our eyes, and then I made a map
And knew that somehow I could find my way back
Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too
So I stayed in the darkness with you"

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart
