Toad the Wet Sprocket – Come Back Down Lyrics 11 years ago
Definitely about drug addiction. "Hey Joe, can you spare a buck, I could use some food". Implies this person needs to borrow money, probably can't make it on their own.

Also, the person is also dealing with people nagging them about getting clean it seems.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Way Away Lyrics 11 years ago
I definitely sounds like someone at a loved one's wake/funeral and all the people they had to deal with to get through the day. Sounds like an excruciating experience.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Pray Your Gods Lyrics 11 years ago
If this song had been written by Glen today, I would say that this song is about the decline of religion, and the rise of a more secular world. I'm not sure what his views were when he wrote this song but I know today he leans more towards atheism (he's mentioned it a couple of times), Maybe this view is more agnostic (can't decide either way if a higher deity exists or not).

I'm reading this in terms of religion having a voice and speaking these words.
"I feel my body weakened by the years, As people turn to gods of cruel design" Here where religion is declining as people become more secular. Once again in the lyrics "I fear my time is short, There are armies moving on, Be quick, my love" Where religion pleads for people to believe, as time passes people seem less likely to follow. So be quick, and have faith once again.

Maybe it was his way thinking about his own lack of faith in religion and possibly seeing it more prominently around him in his own life. BUT…that's just my own opinion. I love analyzing Toad's music!

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Fly From Heaven Lyrics 11 years ago
Glen identifies more towards atheism at this point in his life but I do believe he and/or his family are Jewish. I find it very interesting the religious connotations of this song and probably came from a different perspective from earlier in his life.

I think he did humanize Jesus in this song and that people did put him on a pedestal, but in the end crucified him for all he stood for. So the ultimate question would be "would he fly from heaven, to this world again?". Is it true what everyone said he was 'our savior' and would he come back. When all he (Glen) might think he was just human…just a man, but a good man. The ultimate question of religion really…does a higher deity exist?

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Are We Afraid Lyrics 11 years ago
I recall during an interview Glen saying that sometimes he just wrote random things not knowing himself what it all meant. I'm guessing this is one of those songs. It is too vague, very abstract but beautiful nonetheless. These guys are amazing, and even more so for the young age they were when all these albums were released. Simply incredible.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – All Right Lyrics 11 years ago
I know Todd Nichols sings the vocals on this song but I get the impression the lyrics are mostly Glen Phillip's. I know Glen has battled with depression in the past and the lyric style seems to be his.

I've listened to Lapdog songs (Todd, Dean, and Randy) and Todd's lyric style seem to be more literal than Glen's abstract form of writing.

I agree with what was mentioned above about the meaning being about sudden success and not being able to deal with all that comes with it. Either way, this song is absolutely beautiful for the lyrics and Todd's delivery on his vocals. He sounds amazing and definitely adds to that melancholy tone.

Toad is one of my all-time favorite bands if not, THE all-time favorite band for me. I'm so glad they are back together.
