I always assumed this song to be about abortion, with the abortionist being the titular "Harvester", benefitting from both the "sorrow" of the circumstances of a drug-addicted and alcoholic mother (possibly in an abusive relationship as well), and the suffering of the fetus within a mother feeding it on drugs and drink, its suffering as it is killed, its sorrow at realizing it will never have a chance to grow up, etc.. and yet it is perversely grateful ("Your loss becomes my gain...") feeling that it's better to be murdered in the womb than be born to both a set of monstrous parents and an insane world... Of course, this doesn't line up perfectly, but all this came from a sort of vision I had while listening to this song for the first time as a teenager in the eighties... |
