| I see a split mind in this song. The main vocal is his resolution to talk, to overcome shyness as YOU SAY. The Backing vocals are his doubts, about how he is seen, thought and felt by the person(s) his willing to talk to, in a word his self awareness, as you said. I am a very shy and secretive person, so I always feel what is said in this song, like the feeling of weakness, of being drowning, of lack of breath and so on. | |

Every time I listen to this song I think about myself and of how paranoia or paranoid thoughts can take control of your life. I am not sure if it's a universal feeling, since if people feel it too, they hide it the same way I do. "Button your lip" is seen as a shield you can not let slip, secretiveness is a "bullet proof mask" that keeps you alive. And whenever anyone try to aks you things or try to enter your world, paranoid and petrified eyes can protect your self. The "fixed grin" is another shield that available when you are among people. Those masks always work and they start to replace your true self, to the point you see yourself "laughing too loud at the rest of the world": you have lost all the references that were given to to you by the "stories of fam, fortune and glory", "the pie in the sky" which could relief your pain is not there, it's "miles too high". So, in deppression, between the the young and the old age, you don't hav any choice unless go on hiding, now "behind brown and mild eyes". |
