Tool – Right in Two Lyrics 11 years ago
In the Renaissance, a character named "Thelemia" represents will or desire in the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili of the Dominican monk Francesco Colonna. The protagonist Poliphilo has two allegorical guides, Logistica (reason) and Thelemia (will or desire). When forced to choose, he chooses fulfillment of his sexual will over logic.

Personally, I believe this is way more basic in delivery, then in meaning. If you’ve ever watched any Primates for a long period of time. They will literally fight over anything that there isn’t enough of; with the dominant Primate winning said scare object. However, Primates tend to live in groups, sharing what is overabundant.

I think Maynard is just calling all of us Primates in basic nature, but that we differ because we have “free will”, “reason”-ing skills, and thumbs. Which have lead to us being deviant in nature because “free will” makes us lose sight of what is necessary, “reason” makes us think that we NEED things that we don’t (and the ability to justify), and the thing that makes us different from Primates in physical nature (thumbs) leads to us building more efficient ways to hurt, harm and kill each other.

The combination will lead to us fighting over everything, until there is literally nothing left to fight over on this planet. Or the planet is divided by completely differing ideas of what “free will” and “reason” are given to us for.

With "Angels on the sideline again; Been so long with patience and reason; Angels on the sideline again; Wondering when this tug of war will end.” Basically saying that the righteous (Angels, being devout and in as high praise as he held his mother, see 10,000 days (Part 2)) will win, in the end. The “Primates” will destroy each other until they are all gone. Since, Angels are not allowed to interfere with free will and would interrupt our idea of reason.

“Hanging the jury”- usually results in a judge ruling. My guess is that the change from “innocent” to “guilty” encompasses the idea that no matter the guilt, the corruption of “the jury” happens when those in power want a specific result.

“Leave it Alone” is, ironically, the song that you left out. Completion of thoughts is necessary, as artists tend to immerse themselves in their work. Why would he have one song that doesn’t fit the theme? Probably would have left it off the album.

A Perfect Circle – Passive Lyrics 11 years ago
This song I feel relates to a person that has been dealt a terrible hand in life (such as his mother’s coma for 27 years). The doctor says she is dead, but her brain is alive. Being her son he is “the ever optimistic one” that she will come out of the coma. Depression is setting in due to the situation, becoming the person’s “Perfect Enemy.” Because it is very easy to destroy yourself, as you know all your own strengths and weaknesses.

In the first chorus, “You disappoint me,” is signaling a religious approach to a traumatic event. Its soft and hopeful that he will find forgiveness in the situation.

With Maynard’s use of lyrics and songs about drug use. This song, to me, has a double meaning. It is his understanding of “the coma” type situation (his mother). And his jump into drug use. “Maybe your better off this way”, is a comment on being high and not wanting to feel anything about the hospital situation. He knows that he is not taking the right path “Having the right and ability, to become my perfect enemy,” but still chooses to use drugs. Passive-aggressively being angry at himself for putting himself in the same state as his mother; heroin induces a coma-like state, while he can choose to be something more than in a coma (I feel this shows the sympathy for his mother situation by using “like” comparisons).

"Leaning over you here, cold and catatonic I catch a brief reflection of
what you could and might have been.” Is the actual use of drugs, weaving his mother’s struggle with his own leap into drug use. “Cold and catatonic.” He is leaning over to inject himself, but thinking about not doing it again; relating to his mothers state (coma).

The rest is an argument with himself, trying to convince himself to stop using. The prevalence of the “Maybe you're better off”, while dropping the “this way”, signals to me the anger in the argument. The repetition of his want to not be using. Then the song becomes much more angry.

The final chorus adds the angry shouting of “You fucking disappoint me.” He is mad at himself for using and not stopping. Along with Maynard’s conflict with God and religion, likely because his mother passed even after accepting religion and “God’s forgiveness.” Saying that he is disappointed in something his mother found solace in; he doesn’t understand why religion didn’t save her. So he continues using. Not wanting to deal with the death but being much more angry. Comparing religion’s teachings of being passive and believing, but his own drug use as passive-aggressive. Knowing that his mother can hear him and he can hear his own thoughts is “Why can’t you turn and face me” at the end of the song. In a coma you can hear people (it is said) and on drugs you can still think negative thoughts and destroy yourself, but tend to not do anything about it.

Drug use to deal with his mother’s coma is his own “passive-aggressive bullshit”

This is a great take on the lyrics. I agree to a point; could definitely be about his mom and her coma and her jump into religious “passive-agressive” forgiveness to God.

But I also feel like this is his jump into using drugs, because of how he feels about his mother being in a coma, more than his conflict with God. The "perfect enemy" being himself, on drugs he cannot convince himself to stop, so he’s “better off this way.”

"Leaning over you here
Cold and catatonic
I catch a brief reflection
What you could and might have been
It's your right and your ability
To become my perfect enemy”

Could be a double meaning for his heroin use (he is destroying his life because her life is destroyed), or visiting his mother in the hospital. Cold and Catatonic describes both situations and could be a merging of the two situations.

This is exactly what I thought. However, with his history of songs about drug use. I feel this is a “cry out” for help. He is yelling at himself for knowing what is happening but not responding to his inner-self. Being Passive, not doing anything and Aggressive, being angry about his drug use.

“Wake up and face me (Why can’t you turn and face me)” Is not being able to deal with the fact that he is addicted to drugs.

“You disappoint me” is being upset with his choices, and “Maybe you’re better off this way” is the drugs telling him that he wants the drugs.
