| @[angelangel:910] and to be honest... her version is WAY better than Nirvana's, not to mention the lyrics. | |
| Hole – Northern Star Lyrics | 11 years ago |

This is one of her few Kurt songs (along with Doll Parts and Honey). When Celebrity Skin came out Northern star was one of the best tracks on it but she never really commented on the song, she just said it was inspired by the town of Seattle. The thing is, it doesn't take a PHD to see this was her widow song. I read somewhere that before Celebrity Skin Hole had recorded an album in New Orleans but had decided to scrap it because it was "too self-pitying". It was just after Kurt's death and the pain was still very raw, plus everyone expected Courtney to do a widow record and, despite her very public displays of grief at gigs, she didn't seem prepared to want to talk about Kurt in her lyrics just yet. The song reminds me of the day Kurt died, when she read his suicide note to the fans waiting outside the house. It is an incredibly poignant song. I remember seeing Hole in Paris during the Celebrity Skin tour. During the violin bridge she sang "I will see you, I will see you on the other side" and everyone knew who she was singing to. I remember turning towards the girl next to me (a perfect stranger) and we both burst into tears and hugged. It was one of my best Hole moments. |

@[newdawnfadesSY:908] She never really mentions it anymore and they haven't played it for years. Still I think it's one of her best tunes. Your interpretation is slightly different from mine but it works ! |

It's not often you find a tune that good, a song that makes you genuinely cringe with uneasiness and brings you on the verge of nausea because the arrangements, the vocals and the lyrics all perfectly convey the horror of what the song is about. This is art. This is what bloody contractions and gynaecological torture sound like. According to Courtney at the time, Mrs Jones is a song about a botched abortion. The vocals are oppressed, panting in places, howling in agony in others. The lyrics are full of references to the sickness and distress of the mother, culminating with her speaking to the foetus as she waits for it to come out her ("Come, slide... I will, I will follow you down the sick drain/ When I lean on…on the sink.../ Don't worry, don't worry, don't worry, baby/You will, you will never stink so bad again"). Feverish apologies to a male partner about the anguish caused by the operation (I'm sorry man, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have looked at it, I'm sorry man/ You night blooming sickle cell, you're a night blooming sickle cell/ Carry it away, get it away) alternate with pleas to "Mrs Jones" (possibly the nurse ?) to come and relieve her discomfort. The bridge is a disturbing interlude filled with groans of pain and loud outbursts of desperate swearing. Brrr... As the outro gradually brings the chaos to a still, a stern female voice is heard admonishing the main character, still panting from anxiety and shock : "Breathe… Don't ask me again. Don't ever talk to me like that again." Masterpiece, ladies and gentlemen. Masterpiece. |

I have to say, from the ultimate Queen of rock lyrics, "why did the chicken cross the road" isn't the best line she's ever penned down … I love the song's riff but the lyrics are a bit naff… |

| Hole – Old Age Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Hester Prynne, main character of the novel "the Scarlet Letter", forced to wear an "A" for Adultery on her clothes for sleeping with a guy out of wedlock. Anne Boleyn, mistress of Henry VIII during his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Anne was crowned queen after Henry divorced Catherine but she was hugely unpopular with the public, again, like Hester Prynne, for sleeping with someone people disapproved of. Chokers were fashionable during Tudor Times. The song contains strong references to female self-doubt, fear of ageing, regrets about drug use ("And then she begs and she says "Pretty please? I'll make her pure again; I'll make her CLEAN"), hopes that someday she'll find the strength to get clean and face life without the crutch of drugs (Someday she won't have to fake it, LIVING WILL itself seem sacred,Someday she will just refuse). This version is, I find, much more poignant than the Nirvana version. |

| The bridge is awesome, especially in the version where her and Kurt both sing together | |
| Hole – Gutless Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
nah guys, this song is a dig at Riot Grrrls, just like Olympia/Rock Star. Girl Germs was a Riot Grrrl zine created by members of the band Bratmobile. "Revolutions come and die" is Courtney dissing the RG "Revolution", a concept which she has always very been critical of. The first verse seems to refer to the loneliness and isolation of young women in the Riot Grrrl scene, putting all their hopes in a Revolution announced by zines but which, in the end, failed to materialise. Courtney refers to Riot Grrrls as "gutless" and presents herself as a defiant figure standing alone on the rock scene after the RG movement folded. |

| Hole – Use Once And Destroy Lyrics | 11 years ago |

'All dressed in red, always the bride Off with her head, all dressed in white Off with her head' Now the historian in me is tempted to see in this a Tudor reference . Mary Queen of Scots, as a young widow wore the colour of mourning for queens : white. She was accused of murdering her husband Lord Darnley and was finally executed by decapitation ("off with her head"). On the day of her execution, she wore red, the colour of martyrdom. Courtney seems to have an interest in the Tudors judging by the use of Anne Boleyn pictures in some of her album's art and she seems to have been inspired by the archetype of the decapitated queen. But again I may be reading too much into this ! |

She totally owns that version. F***ing AWESOME lyrics ("Give me dick/ Give me speed/ Give me white hot hate/ One day my prince will come/ But man, it's just to late"…. GENIUS !) I know what some of you are saying about her using that whore archetype, that's something she's used all through her lyrical career (from Teenage Whore to Life despite God to Samantha) and that 's one lyrical persona she does really really well. I don't think she's demeaning herself I think at that stage in her life she was hanging out with porn stars a lot and having a wild time, she probably felt like she needed to show them that not only was she the girl with the most cake, but also that with the most dick… This song must be very hard to sing live, you need good back up singers as the vocals are very layered. It's got so much ENERGY ! |

| Courtney Love – Pacific Coast Highway Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I have a slightly different interpretation guys… I have a feeling this is a song about Steve Coogan whom she was briefly seeing at the time. (Don't laugh, he comes from the sea… England) .He once said in an interview that him and Courtney had spent days and days ("of perfect sex?") partying in a hotel room and that she'd opened up to him and told him things she's never told anyone before. You may infer it was about Kurt as Coogan, in that interview, seemed genuinely concerned and empathetic towards Courtney (of course after that things deteriorated a tad bit but that's another story). It's by far one of her best songs, and if it is indeed about Coogan she probably thinks "Damnit, those cocaine days". But knowing her, we'll probably never know ! | |

I tend to see it as her farewell song to him too. I think the lines : "and if I wanted fame now Or the glory of the womb And if I want my name emblazed on every light a new And if I wanted Christ Or a messiah by my side I can't believe in anything I know that Mary lied" are amongst the most poignant she s ever written. There's a broken desperation about it, it's monumental. |

| Courtney Love – Stand Up Mother Fucker Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Great tune which didn't make it to the final tracklist of Nodoby's Daughter. I love the lyrics (verse 2 is GENIUS!!) , my only criticism would be that maybe it's one verse too long, but still brilliant. Appears to be about a relationship gone sour with a married A-Lister, although when she first wrote it Courtney said she penned it to upset her newly- found grandmother, writer Paula Fox. Apparently Paula had said she was shocked by Courtney's manners and language. One cannot help suspecting, of course, that there may be more to this story than just an upset gran, and that somewhere in Hollywood there's a "cynical, resigned" motherfucker who lacks discipline and who knows this song is a testament to his lack of balls. I bet he doesn't brag about it. @KurtTBO : can we drop that "murderess" bs theory, it's so 1994 ? |
