Not as simple as it looks! I think she is expressing ambivalence and confusion. There is contradiction in the words. At first she talks about the desire to do various things that would get her away. Then later She says that she does them. The song's video is very revealing. There is someone dressed in a lion costume that very propablly represents the 'man' she is trying to escape. A cuddly lion that she kisses at the end of the video. |

| The song is about the ending of a close loving friendship and an intense feeling of having been mistreated like a "tin can kicked down a street". This feeling makes everything look bleak to the singer who feels alienated and jaded. It provokes a bitter sarcasm. Thus the "scarecrows" are anybody who is trying to be fashionable or shopping for clothes. The "frozen smiles" shows that they are seen as without real human feelings and full of selfishness. "Bright the signs" are the city's advertising billboards inducing more useless, sefish consumerism. The rain is the ultimate symbol of a lack of love in the sense of kindness, warmth, care, humanity.
