| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Red Right Hand Lyrics | 10 years ago |

I feel as if it's a song abut a man with power on an almost apocalyptic scale, hence the heavily daunting and foreboding tune. Someone who can get you anything, for a price. Several comments have already suggested that the song is based around Randal Flagg from The Stand, and I can see where they're coming from; a man with mysterious motives who can offer you the world as long as you do one little thing for him, the role fits perfectly. Personally I interpret it as a deal with the devil, or someone much like him. The line "microscopic cog in his catastrophic plan" heavily suggests that his overall goal is something chaotic and evil-like doomsday- and "red right hand" could be taken in a literal sense, seeing as the devil is generally personified as a red guy with horns. TL;DR: The guy the song is describing is an anarchist masquerading as your friend. |

The song is based around the wants of a person who is enslaved by love (I'm a puppet on a string). He is obsessively attached to his lover and his mind has thoughts only for her (she's a silver lining lone ranger riding through an open space in my mind). It's a grim interpretation of love and the freedom it can strip you of. He wants nothing other than to be her toy, her slave, hence the line "all I want to hear her say is are you mine?" |
